He loved his family and the great outdoors. He volunteered at church, at schools, and with the Hunger Coalition. Once Alzheimer’s set in, Peter and Sandra moved to Boulder, CO for a short period and, in 2019, decided to move “back home” to Milwaukee, having been away since 1965. He and Sandra did trips that were less adventurous to Thailand, Europe, Mexico, Cuba, Turkey, and Hawaii. He traveled to Norway for the original Birkebeiner and to Asiago, Italy for a World Masters event. Peter competed in x-country ski races across Idaho and participated in “the Birkie” over ten times in northern Wisconsin. He rode Cycle Oregon for ten years and, at the age of 65, biked across the country (4,200 miles from the coast of Oregon to the coast of Maine) with a buddy, a saddle bag and a credit card. He also scaled many of the Fourteeners in Colorado. He climbed Mount Kilimanjaro, trekked to Base Camp II at Mount Everest, climbed the Remarkables in New Zealand and hiked the Inca trail in Peru.
When the time came for empty nesting, Peter resumed his athletic exploits and adventure travel with a focus on hiking, mountaineering, cycling and x-country skiing. Peter was on the board of the children’s school and participated in many, many school events. He attended basketball games, track meets, and as many as eight soccer games a week. He coached both his son and the girls in soccer. In spite of his business travels, Peter spent lots of time with his family. He traveled a great deal to call on customers. He was known for his integrity and fair dealing and he developed many lifelong friendships with publishers, colleagues and competitors. He sold paper all over the US and later in Europe and Asia as well. Peter worked in the newsprint industry for over 50 years. They lived first in Chicago - then in Winnetka, Atlanta, Dallas, Portland, Boise, and finally in Ketchum/Sun Valley, Idaho, where they spent more than 25 years. They had four children in rapid succession (Amy in 1966, Karl in 1967, Molly in 1969 and Sally in 1972) and they moved around the country frequently as Peter moved up the ranks in his career. Peter and Sandra were married in 1965 and they kept very busy. That was the beginning of Peter’s career in newsprint. “Well,” said Peter, “I thought I would like to go to Europe for a few months.” Irv replied, “That is not an option“ and shortly thereafter Peter was in Canada learning the newspaper business, from the woods operation to the press room floor. He asked Peter what his plans were now that he was no longer in school. A few weeks after his return, his father Irv asked that they have a one-on-one meeting. Peter left Union College in 1962 and returned to Milwaukee. He attended Union College in Schenectady, New York where he pledged Chi Psi, played football and made many friends. Peter met his future wife, Alexandra Spiess (Sandra) at a roller skating party in 1958 when they were both in high school. He was a fine athlete, lettering in football, basketball and track & field. Peter was the youngest of four children and he went to school at Hartford Elementary, St. Based on the fact that his birthday was the day after Christmas, he jokingly liked to refer to himself as the “second coming.” Peter was born in Milwaukee to Irwin (Irv, who was Chairman & Publisher of the Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel) and Loraine Maier on December 26, 1940. He lived a long and good life and was ready to pass gently into heaven after a difficult battle with Alzheimer’s.
